1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Funded in part by the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation’s endowment, the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program is designed to emphasize the importance of reading aloud to children. It develops pre-literacy skills and introduces children’s literature to the youngest readers in our community.

Research shows that children introduced to reading early on in their lives tend to read earlier and excel in school. This program encourages young children and their families to develop positive associations with reading by spending quality time together as they read. By reading just one book a day, families can reach the 1,000-book goal and ensure that their children begin life with essential pre-reading skills.
