14 Oct Libraries for the Next Generation

With the heartfelt goal of updating our beloved and “well-loved” Children’s Library, the Foundation recently hosted an intimate evening titled Libraries for the Next Generation. Held in a stunning mission-style home just down the street from the Library itself, the event brought together over 90 local supporters, advocates, and lovers of the Library. They arrived in their finest “Santa Barbara Cocktail” attire, enthusiastic to support a space that helps local children learn, grow, and feel safe.
The evening began with an interactive entry experience: guests selected notecards from a canvas covered in envelopes, each revealing a unique fact about the Library. From annual program stats to lesser-known services such as state park pass checkouts and community baby showers for new parents, these cards sparked excitement and appreciation. Guests continued trading their fact cards throughout the evening, spreading even more knowledge and conversation about the Library.
As the golden hour lit up the home through arched French doors, guests explored displays showing the current state of the Children’s Library while highlighting the community it has built. The posters brought the event to life, featuring photos of smiling children playing with toys, reading to dogs, and engaging with other children and librarians, reminding everyone why they gathered that day. Both indoors and outdoors, guests exchanged personal stories and memories about the Library while enjoying themed appetizers that encapsulate the main ideas of the night: Legacy of Learning, Nurturing Bites, and Imagination Bites.
The speaker series brought even more life to the evening, as everyone shared their personal relationships to the Library. After thanking everyone for being a part of this event, Board member David McFadden reminded everyone that the night was about more than just fundraising, but about the legacy of the Library and children’s literacy.
Fellow board member and educator Paloma Arnold shared how three generations of her family have found belonging in the Library’s welcoming spaces, hoping that others can experience this same Library magic. Her daughter, Alexandra, described the joy of checking out books, scanning her Library card, and falling in love with reading through the Harry Potter series. She displayed gratitude for the Library showing her that learning can be fun, encourage exploration, and lead her to her passion.
To wrap up the speeches, the Foundation Director, Lauren Trujillo, emphasized the gap between public funding and the Library’s vision, recognizing the importance of the Foundation. She spoke of the Children’s Library as a space that nurtures early literacy, shaping our next generation of thinkers, leaders, and dreamers. She inspired the crowd to join the Foundation in supporting the future of the Library and our children.
Thanks to the generosity of our guests, the event raised $25,000 which will directly benefit the Children’s Library. This event showed how passionate our Santa Barbara community is about our children and the Library. The Foundation wants to thank all who contributed to a future with a thriving Library.
