Santa Barbara Public Library Does Sustainability and You Can Too!

Did you know that the Santa Barbara Public Library is one of fifteen California local library systems (1,127 total public libraries in California) selected to receive first-ever funding from the State Library to support projects focused on sustainability, climate resilience, and community engagement for the 2023-2024 year?

This State Library grant will fund a series of programs and classes, and in collaboration with local businesses, non-profits, and City departments. SBPL will engage the public in bilingual hands-on gardening programs, mending workshops, expand our Library of Things collection to include tools, household goods, host educational lectures on sustainable living topics, and more!

Library Foundation Board Member, Stephanie Riordan recently attended one of the composting workshops and shared, “Yesterday’s composting workshop held at Eastside Library captured a large audience. Well done Santa Barbara Public Library!! I learned helpful tips. As did many from the great questions.”

Without the incredibly talented staff and librarians at the Santa Barbara Public Library that allow the Library to qualify, apply, and execute on State grant opportunities, new innovative programs like the Sustainability Series would not be possible. It is important to acknowledge that majority of Library programming is grant funded and at risk of long-term support. Budget challenges continue to limit the capacity of staff and the investment in their critical work like the Sustainability Series that will educate the community on how to personally take local climate action.

The Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation supports the long-term health and sustainability of the Santa Barbara Public Library through public-private partnerships. This means advocating with your support for the public dollars that need to be invested to keep talented staff, paired with private dollars to help continue their impactful program efforts.
