16 May Measure I
Thanks to the voters of Santa Barbara County, Measure I will be active as of April 1, 2025. Introduced by the city council, this measure is designed to support Santa Barbara’s essential local services. Funds collected under Measure I will be allocated based on the most pressing needs, as determined by the council’s collective priorities list. This includes affordable housing programs, maintaining 911 emergency response, keeping public spaces clean, and, of course, supporting Library services.
To generate these essential funds, the city council has implemented a small, one-half percent increase in sales tax, estimated to raise $15.6 million annually. With Santa Barbara facing a growing structural deficit, Measure I provides a solution in maintaining these services. These funds will be strictly allocated to the designated list, ensuring that our city remains safe, beautiful, and a more equitable place to live.
Measure I is essential to the Library’s role as a societal safety net for the Santa Barbara community. Beyond offering books and information services, the Library provides literacy programs, job-search assistance, internet access, and safe, welcoming spaces for children, families, and community building. The Library provides an abundance of services, catering to all ages and needs. With Measure I, these vital services will continue to thrive and support our community.
Thank you to everyone who supported Measure I, as it is more than just a financial solution, but a step forward in providing the Santa Barbara community with what we need: a safe environment, reliable resources, and vibrant community.
