2024 has been a year of growth and transformation for the Santa Barbara Public Library, and it’s all thanks to YOU — patrons, community partners, and advocates.
With your support, including the passage of Measure I, we’ve been able to maintain essential Library services for all. As we wrap up an exciting year, let’s take a moment to celebrate the achievements that made 2024 unforgettable.
Michael Towbes Library Plaza Grand Opening
– Together, we completed a $5 million campaign with a $1 million endowment, creating a vibrant hub for learning, arts, and connection.
– Delivered a grand opening attended by thousands, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and performances by renowned local arts organizations, showcasing the Plaza’s role as a cultural epicenter.
Enhanced Collection & New Offerings
– SBPL installed a new book drop to make returning materials easier and more convenient for the community.
– Added thousands of new physical and digital books, enriching the Library’s collection for readers of all ages.
Successful SB Reads Programs
– Hosted 20 engaging events, including a Romance Author Panel and a kickoff celebration, bringing together readers from across Santa Barbara.
– Provided hundreds of free books to the community, encouraging widespread participation and a love for reading.
Library Fun for Everyone!
– Upgraded the Children’s Library with new movable Hublet stations, craft carts, and engaging toys, supported by the Children’s Library Endowment.
– Helped provide lunches for adults and caregivers at this year’s Lunch at the Library that served 1,780 people under 18 over 41 days.
Adult Education & Workforce Development
– Advocated for a partnership with the FARO Center to provide educational resources and workforce development for individuals experiencing homelessness.
– SBPL staff dedicated over 132 hours, assisting 42 patrons with workforce development.
Expanded Library on the Go Services
– Library on the Go brought Library services directly to patrons at 426 van stops, ensuring more residents can access books, technology, and resources.
– Secured funding for a second Library on the Go Van, coming soon, to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of the mobile Library program.
