Libraries are community hubs, providing critical access to literacy for learners of all ages and backgrounds. The new Library Plaza will be an extension of the Library itself and allow the Library to bring its free educational and cultural resources onto an accessible, outdoor place.

LEARN WITH LIBRARY PROGRAMS

Storytimes

Parents and caregivers need outdoor time as much as their children – and the Library Plaza will be a place for all to gather, learn, and grow. “Our Baby and Me, Bilingual Baby and Me, and Baby Music and Movement programs are so popular, they create a ‘stroller-derby’ in the Library. More space in the fresh air for these activities will better serve parents and caregivers,” said Library Director Jessica Cadiente.

Harry Potter’s Birthday

Wizards and muggles of all ages overflow the Santa Barbara Public Library every July 31 for an evening of magic to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday. Imagine that party of over 1200 fans spilling out into a beautiful Santa Barbara evening in a well-lit, accessible Plaza, with surrounding restaurants and businesses benefiting from the fun.

LEARN WITH OUR PARTNERS

Opera Santa Barbara

In partnership with Opera Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Public Library provides a performance space in the Faulkner Gallery each season for Opera Santa Barbara’s free Noontime Concerts featuring members of our Chrisman Studio Artist Program. These concerts feature a variety of popular and lesser-known arias and duets.

Noontime Concerts on Library Plaza could attract more passersby’s, neighbors, and downtown workers on lunch to this free program and introduce many more community members to the Opera.

Pacific Pride Foundation

In partnership with Pacific Pride Foundation’s PROUD Youth Group and Social Justice Book Club, the Santa Barbara Public Library offers a safe space for teen programming and discussions on books that examine various social injustices, stereotypes, and prejudices that exist in our current world.

The new Library Plaza can be a space for outdoor PROUD Youth Group gatherings, panel discussions, conferences, and book club meetings.
